Interior & Equipment
The interior of this camper is superb and unmarked. All original seats have been stripped back, repainted frames, resprung, new padding and all finished in cream TMI California seat covers, door cards and kick panels retrimmed in matching TMI and all professionally fitted by North East Trimmers. New Wolfsburg West rubber flooring under the two front seats, rubber mats to cab, walkthrough and passenger area, the passenger area also has a tailored luxury black carpet. All new Deluxe door handles and winders, new sun visors, full new headlining by Bromsgrove Trimmers, Deluxe rear window bar.
The Factory fit metal sunroof winding mechanism and cables have all been renewed it operates with ease. New seatbelts to all 7 seats, the rear bench seat has high quality Z bed hinges fitted allowing it to turn into a full size bed, the middle 3/4 bench seat is removable making it ideal for camping trips away. The original Bakelite steering wheel is in excellent order, unspoilt dashboard, original speedo, clock, fuel gauge and electrics all work as they were intended. A period sound system has been fitted with MP3 connectivity.
To summarise this is an immaculate, sharp interior that really suits this desirable Microbus.
Exterior
This distinctive and desirable Type 2 Early Bay was subject to a bare metal restoration with a before, during and after full photographic record completed in 2011.
The flawless and stunning two-tone paintwork in Savannah Beige (Code L620) with white roof, bumpers and overiders (Code L90D) has a deep bright uniformed shine throughout with super straight panels, excellent panel fit and gaps, complete with a positive door closure as you would expect from a VW and such a quality restoration.
All of the original VW Sekurit glass is in excellent order and unmarked, all the Deluxe rubber window seals have been replaced. Most external lights are original fitment, the Deluxe stainless steel belt line trim has been replaced with a quality Kieft & Klok stainless steel one along with the air-intake and wipers. The chrome door furniture is immaculate throughout and one key fits all external locks.
The chassis is in excellent order and has been professionally but lightly waxoyled in 2015 & 2019 and inspected yearly... Truly Stunning
Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
Filling the arches are set of 5 brand new VW steel wheels with new stainless steel hubcaps, stainless steel beauty rings and premium Falken Sincera 185/70R 14 white wall tyres supplied by Mr Whitewalls.
The servo-assisted front disc brakes pull up sharply and true with a positive peddle feel.
Engine & Transmission
The spotlessly clean show standard engine bay houses a newly fitted in 2008 AD code 4-cylinder Twin Port Air-Cooled rear mounted Boxer engine increased to 1641cc. Complete with electronic ignition, high torque starter motor, full stainless steel exhaust and manifold system. The engine was removed in 2018 to detail the tinwear and various parts in gloss black powder coat.
He pulls strongly with no hesitation and effortlessly keeps up on motorways and dual carriageways. Needless to say he runs perfectly with no issues, starts from hot or cold easily, idles as it should The recent replacement clutch is light and progressive in operation, the 4-speed gearbox selects easily and is positive and precise in operation...
Wonderful, such fun to drive and what an unmistakable sound track.
Summary
This desirable one year only model, US Spec, Early Bay Sunroof Deluxe 7 seater Microbus (Code22) was completed on the 15th October 1970 at the VW factory in Emden Germany and shipped to Los Angeles on 30th October 1970, all confirmed by the VW Heritage Certificate from 'Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagon'.
The history file contains the original State of California, Department of Motor Vehicles registration card renewal that confirms the vehicle was first sold in 1971.
Imported from California by Kieft & Klok and sold by them on 9th June 2006 to the first UK owner, Mr Paul Hill. The second and only other UK owner purchased the Microbus on 20th April 2012.
This Microbus has been restored and maintained at great expense. The sizeable detailed history file contains many invoices, receipts, past mots and restoration pictures etc. totalling tens of thousands of pounds. Maintained and serviced annually by a classic VW specialist garage this is one not to be missed.
Since the full restoration in 2011 this Bay has covered a little over 12,000 miles and has been enjoyed an cherished by the last 2 long term owners who have lavishly spent on him (affectionately named Dougal) creating this stunning bus we have available today.
A full service and 12 months MOT will be completed at the point of sale and of course this Early Bay is HPI Clear.
