Completely re-trimmed to the highest standard during the restoration with no expense spared by recognised coach and trim works K Baggs Trimming of Poole in Dorset. The original contrasting colours of Natural Leather and Brown Boucle carpeting were used to create this outstanding interior. The attention to detail is second to none and one of the finest we have seen... Stunning
Finished in factory Signal Red (Code 568H). The bodywork was subject to an extensive bare metal restoration by Nidor Bodyworks of Poole in Dorset. It's clear to see the paintwork is still flawless today which is testament to the quality of workmanship some 10 years ago. The panel fit throughout is factory perfect. Most body fittings, trims, lights, bumpers, door handles etc were all replaced or re-chromed during the restoration and are still perfect today. The Pagoda hard top is perfect in every detail and unmarked it fits as per the day it left the factory, the black mohair hood was new during the restoration and looks as if its never been used.
The underside of the car is equally as impressive as the top, works included powder coated fuel tank, suspension arms, covers, etc all replaced with new or recoated, the pictures do not do it justice.
It would be very difficult to find another Pagoda to even come close to the attention to detail and condition of this one... Simply amazing
The original fully restored Mercedes Benz steel wheels with body colour / chrome centre hub caps and chrome wheel trim rings are in first class order and shod with all matching new Uniroyal Rallye 195/70 14 tyres. During the extensive restoration the brakes were all renewed with new front brake calipers, rear drums, and brake lines needless to say she pulls up effortlessly.
The fully detailed engine bay houses the original matching numbers 6 cylinder engine which has been subject to an extensive documented rebuild using all new parts and completed in 2010. The cylinder head has been converted to run on unleaded fuel, the rare manual 4 speed gearbox and rear axle unit all striped, serviced and rebuilt where necessary. Needless to say she runs perfectly hot or cold and sounds tremendous through the new full stainless steel exhaust system. The clutch is light and progressive in operation, gear change through all gears smooth and precise... A joy to drive.
This incredible matching numbers UK supplied SL was first registered 4th April 1966 to Continental Caterers Limited, Queen Street Cardiff. Since this time it's only had 5 previous owners one of which enjoyed and cherished the car for 37 years, 25 of those in storage (1976-2001) until his retirement in 2009. During 2010 it completed its 10 year mechanical, bodywork and interior restoration and has only covered 1670 miles since. This beautiful SL still remains in pristine order throughout, including the underside.
The extensive work undertaken included a full engine rebuild with unleaded conversion, gearbox and differential overhaul - with original new or refurbished items sourced from Mercedes Benz directly or specialist Companies around the world supplying new old original parts. The history file is packed with invoices for parts, old style buff log book, hand written letters to and from suppliers plus a lovely 2 page detailed article about the car and its history.
The history file documents the 10 year restoration undertaken by Rob Lowe of Forest Corner Garage, Hangersley Hill, Hampshire, there is a letter from him detailing the extensive work carried out. Unfortunately the owner of 37 years died in 2009 just before completion and it was subsequently sold by his widow to a gentleman who completed the restoration. The new purchaser immediately set out to complete the restoration and enlisted Neil Cawte of Cawte Garage who provided all the finishing touches and subsequently has serviced the vehicle every year since.
This is an outstanding example and one of the finest we have seen. Desirable and refined this classic second generation SL is not to be missed especially with values increasing year on year.
A Fresh 12 month MOT will be issued up on sale and of course the SL is HPI Clear.
The second generation SL-Class of 1963 - 1971. A new design with a 2.3-litre mechanically fuel injected six cylinder engine. It featured a low waistline and big curved greenhouse windows, and a Coupe Roadster with detachable hardtop, whose distinctive roofline earned the nickname "pagoda top." the design was by Paul Bracq. Technical Director Prof. Fritz Nallinger focused on increased power and safety quoting "It was our aim to create a very safe and fast sports car with high performance which despite its sports characteristics, provides a very high degree of travelling comfort."
