Summary

FOR THOSE WHO DEMAND PERFECTION...

Here we have an exceptional Hemmels Of Cardiff Neugeboren (To be reborn) 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda in the original and desirable design format of left hand drive...

Starting life in sunny Florida until hand selected by Hemmels for their Neugeboren (To be reborn) process. After two and a half years of bespoke restoration for the new owner. Leaving the factory after Hemmels final road testing and delivered 23rd September 2020.

Hemmels Mercedes-Benz is held in the highest stature amongst classic car connoisseurs and acknowledged as having the provenance of a new car. The Neugeboren process is simply second to none, and this SL we have today is a testament to their incredible attention to detail and craftsmanship.

THE HEMMELS BETTER THAN NEW - The Neugeboren Process:-

DISASSEMBLY - Our expert team carefully disassembles the original car, tagging and storing key components and assessing the work required to deliver a world-class restoration

BACK TO METAL - A non-chemical process strips the shell and removes corrosion before we begin metal work. We repair and replace all decayed panels with Mercedes-Benz parts.

ENGINE REBUILD - The engine is entirely disassembled and undergoes a complete nut and bolt rebuild to "as new" condition using only parts supplied directly by Mercedes-Benz.

METAL WORK - Our expert team carefully repair or replace every single panel as required, ensuring the final product is as good as when it originally came off the production line.

PAINT PROCESS - Our proven paint process delivers a perfect finish with base coats, clears, and primers having chemical coherence to ensure protection and presentation for decades to come.

ASSEMBLY - The engine and underlying mechanicals are re-assembled in Hemmels' finishing facility — described in a recent industry article as "surgical".

INTERIOR - The custom leather work and complete interior is created and fastidiously fitted by the experts in our dedicated Trim Shop.

ROAD TESTING - Before delivery to the client, each car must undergo and complete a comprehensive testing program before it can be signed off by our Quality team.

In addition to the above fastidious restoration the following options were added at a cost of circa £21,000:-

US Spec Headrests - Tinted Windscreen - Classic Infotainment System including Satelite Navigation and Bluetooth - Leather Bound Floor Mats - Stainless Steel Exhaust System With Polished Mainfolds - Electronic Ignition - White Wall Tyres - Signature Series Lacquered Package Which Includes The Underside Of The Car Being Painted In Body Colour And Clear Lacquered For Protection.

Upon delivery the Pagoda was extensively detailed prior to being driven by Divine Detail Ltd; Kamikaze Zipang coating applied to bodywork and trims, Kamikaze Stance applied to the wheels, Kamikaze leather guard, Gtechniq smart fabric to roof fabric, ACF50 and Corrosion Block applied to the underside...

The History file contains some interesting documentation from its long term past owners in Florida. The last state-side owner we understand prior to being shipped to the UK in 2018 was Mr Bob Trimple who acquired this SL on 5th October 1983 and owned a respected antique bicycle museum. Various servicing invoices dating back to the early 1990's, Mr Trimple's certificate of registration from October 1983, original 280 SL owner's manual, two sets of keys and the all important Hemmels hardback book with 145 detailed photographs of the car before, during and after the reborn restoration.

A Fresh 12-month MOT will be issued upon sale and of course, this Pagoda  is HPI clear with certificate included.

Competitive Finance Packages available. Similar standard classic cars, sports cars and Motorcycles are welcome in part exchange. We will consider whole collections against this stunning Pagoda, please ask for details.

Without a doubt, one of the finest restorations we have ever seen. Needless to say, it would stand proud in any collection and is one not to be missed.

More details

Introduced in 1963, Mercedes-Benz embraced mid-century elegance and simplicity with a silhouette that would become the design for nearly all SL (Super Light) models to follow—the W113 SL, or known by it’s nickname, the “Pagoda”, for it’s slightly concave removable hard-top.

With a production period spanning just over eight years, the German auto Haus built three separate mechanical trim levels, a 230 (2.3L), 250 (2.5L) and a 280 (2.8L)—all of which featured a straight-six setup and were available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. With its torquey nature and overall small platform, the Pagoda quickly became Mercedes’ flagship sports touring car.
